Unfortunately for Mary, she has learned how to play the Shadow Game* on exactly the same day that her teacher gave her glowing praise for her above-grade-level skills and delightful classroom presence.
Those two seemingly-unrelated facts canceled each other out in that imaginary, giant scoresheet of Parenting Moments.
Kidding, just kidding. . .well, sort of.
*If by some grace of God, you haven't been properly introduced to the Shadow Game, here's a little preview:
Me: "I'll be in the basement folding laundry."
Mary: "I'll be in the basement folding laundry."
Me: "Oh, good, you're going to help me."
Mary: "Oh, good, you're going to help me."
Me: "Let's go. Start folding!"
Mary: "Let's go. Start folding!"
And on and on and on and on and on. . .
