The Secret

I can't say it enough: our Lucy is a character.

Last night, she was holding a plastic-wrapped piece of candy from her Valentine bag. I told her she could have it after dinner, and she promised to hold it nicely until then. I wasn't too concerned because the wrapper required scissors to open, so I left her with the candy wrapper firmly in her grasp.

A few minutes later, while I was on the phone, I saw her crouched down beside the table. I peeked over at her, and saw the scissors in her hand and the wrapper sliced open. As soon as spied me, she smiled cleverly, tried to cover her handiwork clumsily with her hands, and said, "Don't look, Mom, it's a secret!"
A secret indeed.

Ratat...ewwwie

Yes, the rat was captured last Friday. The end wasn't pretty, but thanks to a rat specialist, our home is once more ours and ours alone.

Which left us plenty of cause for celebrating. On Saturday, my wonderful parents took the girls for an overnight stay. They enjoyed a special Valentine's tea party wearing darling little dress-up skirts handcrafted by my mom, Mary reported with glee the next day. What fun!

And while our little mice were away, we cats played. We hosted a dinner party for several of Curtis' coworkers. We feasted and enjoyed chocolate and port for dessert. And had so much fun we saw the ungodly hour of 2am.

On Sunday morning, Curtis and his coworkers enjoyed the "Worst Day of the Year" bike ride around Portland. Though it began with chilly rain, the ride ended with spectacular sunshine that shone down rays of irony on the ride's moniker.

My valentine got me delicious chocolates, gorgeous flowers and a wonderful new phone that has my email hooked right up. He knows me well, doesn't he?

Happy Belated St. Valentine's Day and Day After Rat Capture to all!

Garbage Day (aka more Portlandtopia)

Seen on the side of the garbage truck...

even the garbage haulers have a sense of humor in Portland!

Mary and the Mouse

When we were preparing for our move, our deal pal Kate gave Mary a book titled, "Mary and the Mouse." This week, that book holds new meaning for our family.

A few days ago, as we were sitting in the family room, I thought I saw something rather large, perhaps a mouse, scurrying across the kitchen floor. But, a flashlight check revealed nothing, so I chalked it up to my wild imagination (after all, I've also seen phantom spiders that later turn out to be lint).

Two days ago, even though I had just swept the kitchen floor, I spotted a strange pile of debris under the dishwasher....little hairballs and a few pieces of glass all matted together. Very odd, I thought, as I swept it up.

And then yesterday, to my horror, I found a few mouse droppings. Which led to sheer panic and a two-hour inventory of our food to make sure it hadn't been infiltrated. Nothing. No other signs. But, the droppings were all the evidence I needed to high-tail it to the hardware store and purchase a mouse trap.

This morning, the trap was empty. Perhaps the intruder was just a one-time visitor, I hoped. I went to the basement and poured Greta's breakfast into her bowl. I went back upstairs to find that Lucy's glass of juice had splattered across the floor. Which returned me to the basement to fetch a mop and bucket to clean the kitchen floor. And, can you imagine what I saw? Nope, not a mouse. (Logical guess, though.)

A rat. A large rat with beady eyes and a tail as long as a pencil. It was holding a kibble of Greta's food as it raced down the hallway into the workshop room and disappeared into the wall. (And yes, for the record, I screamed.) And while Greta sniffed madly at the wall, that rat didn't budge from his hiding spot. He sat there chewing his little kibble pleasantly from his resting place. Munch, munch, munch. Greta finally gave up, ate her breakfast and returned to her favorite spot in the sunroom.

So, it's RAT WATCH Day 1. Officially. We shall see how long it takes to trap our newest visitor and find out if he brought any friends along. Meanwhile, I have ordered tough plastic bins for the cupboards. I hope they arrive in our kitchen shelves before our freeloader does!

(And by the way, I realize this post probably cancels out any potential visits from friends that might have read the previous post. I hope to reinstate the good hosting abilities of our house shortly.)

The Drench Report

Since September, we have been tallying the days when it's too rainy for Mary to ride her bike to school. We call it the Drench Report.

The Grand Tally since September (drum roll....) is: IV.

Yes, four. That's it. Honestly, I think we can change the name from the Drench Report to the Friend Recruitment Project (i.e. Move North and Join Us Tally). Portland is not all that dreary or rainy, really. At least, not yet. It's snowy, chilly, sometimes overcast, often damp, but we get many more blue-skied days than anticipated.

As evidence, I submit a snapshot of our trip to the park yesterday. The sunglasses were for utility, not a prop for the picture, I promise.

Mary...... Tyler Moore?

On Friday, Mary rode the bus downtown with Curtis to his office as a new adventure. Her snapshot with her "briefcase" as she gazed up at the big towers surrounding her reminded me so much of another Mary.
